The Digital Thread: From Requirements to Geometry and Verification

A cooling-manifold change shows what a digital thread must preserve when geometry, analysis assumptions, and verification evidence evolve.

A report says that a cooling manifold meets its temperature requirement. The CAD model has since changed.

Is the report still applicable?

A folder containing both files cannot answer that question. Neither can a dashboard that merely displays a green verification icon. A useful digital thread must identify which model, assumptions, and result belong together.

Follow one requirement through the workflow

Consider a requirement limiting temperature at a specified operating condition. A manifold geometry contributes to its realization, but the analysis also depends on coolant properties, flow conditions, heat sources, and contact assumptions.

The evidence is associated with that complete study definition. The geometry filename alone is insufficient.

A proposed trace could connect the requirement, the relevant design revision, the analysis setup, the result, and the review decision.

Treat evidence as specific to a baseline

Suppose an engineer increases a passage diameter. The geometry may remain valid, but an earlier flow result should not silently become evidence for the new revision.

The appropriate outcome might be “review required,” followed by a targeted rerun. Whether a previous result can be reused depends on the recorded assumptions and the approved scope of reuse.

Changing a report’s displayed revision label would not perform that assessment.

Distinguish relationships from conclusions

A link labeled “verified by” needs more meaning than an ordinary hyperlink. It should refer to a particular requirement interpretation, verification method, and outcome.

An analysis can also be informative without proving compliance. An exploratory thermal plot may help choose a design while remaining unsuitable as release evidence.

The NASA systems engineering handbook appendix provides public context for organizing requirements and verification planning. Our research example applies the same need for explicit relationships to evolving geometry.

Ask what happens when the thread breaks

An imported component may lack provenance. A solver setup may reference a missing material definition. A result may exist while its input revision cannot be recovered.

The model should expose those gaps instead of substituting a nearby file or retaining a previous pass indicator.

For NeuroCAD, a useful prototype would demonstrate that a reviewer can reconstruct the basis of a result and detect when it no longer applies. A complete digital thread would require consistent participation across the engineering tools involved; linking a few records would not establish that broader capability.
